Old House and surrounding areas are immersed in historical, cultural and resources of outstanding natural beauty. This region, as yet unspoiled by a high influx of tourists, is promoted as
‘Le Marche, L’Italia in una Regione’.

The historical village of Penna San Giovanni is within the ‘Tre Monte Azzurri’ National Park. The Saline area is a health spa which extends to the river of the same name from whence comes the natural spring water. This water contains different elements including sulphur contributing to its healing properties. There are park areas set aside for picnics surrounded by well tended aquatic plants in running streams and fountains.

It is possible to walk or mountain bike ride along the various tracks making sure you don’t miss the opportunity to walk along the ‘Passaggi d' Acqua’ which is part of the 50 km ‘Landscapes of Water’ tourist trail. This trail encompasses the villages of Gualdo, Penna San Giovanni and Sant Angelo in Pontano.

From the ‘Old House’ within a 30 minute drive, you can reach either the beaches along the Adriatic coast or the mountains in the Sibillini National Park. You will find maps and brochures that will help you discover many of the surrounding places of interest. Some of the best beaches in the world can be found between Numana and San Benedetto.

The Pilato Lake, at 1940 m. above sea level, set in a natural basin on the slope of M. Vettore, has to be high on your list of priorities of places to visit. This natural lake is the home of the 'Chirocephalus of Marchesoni', a little red shrimp unique in the world.
The legend of this lake is linked to Pontius Pilate, the famous Roman governor in Palestine. It is said that he was beheaded and his body thrown into the waters. The lake in fact turns red every summer thus re-fuelling the legend (although this has more to do with the mating colours of the tiny shrimp!). You also may like to visit some other historic towns such as Loreto, Macerata, Urbisaglia, Sarnano and Fermo, becoming engrossed in some of the different historical events that take place from time to time.

Italy is famous for its gastronomic delights and anyone who enjoys their food will be in their element here. We recommend eating out at the local ‘ristoranti’ and if you want to be a bit more adventurous, try some of the local ‘trattoria’.

‘Le Marche’ is heaven for those who enjoy shopping (husbands, look away now)
There are a glut of factory outlets for shoes, clothes, handbags and wallets, excellent ceramics and glass as well as the opportunity to browse through the many local markets :- Sarnano –Thursdays; Civitanova – Saturdays; Cacamo – Sunday afternoons. Of course the leather goods are irresistible both in quality and price and a stylish leather jacket may just tempt the gentlemen back to the shopping experience.
